Welcome to DWD Canberra
Dances with Dogs is not about dancing – rather it is "…innovative and creative moves and movement in time to music, giving the illusion of dance".
If you enjoy learning with and teaching your dog, enjoy tricks and some of the more serious stuff, and have a love of music, then DWD may be the sport for you.
DWD in Canberra started in Sep 2010 and has come a long way since. DWD Judge, Tony Turner, first brought DWD to Canberra where classes were held
just across the border at the Queanbeyan Showground’s main Pavilion. The first trainees, many of whom were local dog club instructors and
active in a number of other sports, quickly became DWD enthusiasts that have contributed much to getting this activity up and flying in the ACT &
surrounds. So much has been contributed – time, energy, ideas, resources and equipment. Classes are now being offered through Canberra's two largest dog training clubs - BDOC and CDC.
In July 2011, six Canberra handlers with seven dogs very successfully entered their first competition hosted by Dogs NSW. In March 2015 Canberra held its inaugural DWD Competition, attracting teams from across NSW and Victoria.
Canberra's inaugural ANKC Judges' Training was held in 2014/15 with the five trainees recognised as ANKC DWD Judges in December 2015.
DWD has caught the eye of many dog enthusiasts in the region; the DWD-group is now regularly asked to perform at dog events, dog park openings and school and church fetes.
Key to the success of the sport is how it enhances dog/handler relationships; the dogs and handlers both have fun and so look forward to lessons. Now isn’t that how it should be? DWD is not just about the high performer – it’s for all levels; the social member is as welcomed as those who want to take part in group/team demonstrations or competitions. So who is DWD for? Owners at any skill/experience level and all ages; dogs of any size and breed. And this definitely includes dogs and handlers with disabilities!
So, why not come along and have a look at what we do? Smiles are guaranteed.
