April 2011From the editorWelcome to The Beat in its new form as an Internet only newsletter. We hope this will save the problems that some members were experiencing with download speeds and email overload. This is completely new to me, so please bear with any delays or mistakes while I'm getting used to it.
Whilst I try to keep the newsletter interesting and relevant, it is difficult to keep it so without more content, so if any of you would like to write an article, review a competition, share a training tip or even just drop me a line with a photo of your dog, I would be grateful. This month we have a report from the AGM as well as a write up of the recent weekend seminar organised by the club which saw international trainers and competitors Kath Hardman and Karen Sykes visiting Queensland to share some of their experience with us. Kath and Karen - Dayboro showgrounds 2nd and 3rd April 2011
by Eddie Kirkman
The first weekend in April saw over 30 DWD enthusiasts descending on the quiet town of Dayboro, about an hour to the North West of Brisbane. In what can only be described as typical Queensland weather (by which I mean the weather that we typically bring out for visitors from England) it rained on and off all weekend, but the weather didn't dampen the spirits of those attending – all of whom were there to learn from Kath Hardman and Karen Sykes – two of the UK's top DWD instructors and competitors.
There was much excitement in the last few weeks leading up to this event – this was a seminar that had first been suggested back in 2009 and many of us had been looking forward to it for most of that time.
First order of business on the Friday night was a sausage sizzle – ably organised by Debby and Trevor, followed by a cabaret, showcasing some of the dogs and handlers. The crowd for this was swelled by some of the members of the Dayboro show grounds committee, who were all very impressed. One of them commented that it was the best hour of free entertainment that he had ever had. I am not sure if this says a lot about the standard of our performers or says more about the quality of the night life in Dayboro.
The venue was the main hall of the Dayboro showgrounds – an undercover and enclosed area with a concrete floor that easily accommodated the 30 plus people as well as leaving plenty of room for half the group to be up and working with their dogs. In fact the only time space was a little tight was when Karen had us up on the floor dancing to her Crufts routine (Hernando's Hideaway) and several people were concentrating so hard on their legs and arms doing the right things that they walked into walls, tables and each other. Thank goodness we had not added dogs to the mix.
The seminar included excellent refreshments (morning and afternoon tea and a light lunch) that was put together for us by the Dayboro show society and kept us all well fed and refreshed and also meant that none of the club members had to miss out on any of the seminar to sort out food.
Several off us were taking advantage of the very inexpensive camping facilities on the grounds and on the Saturday night we all gathered in the dining room and had a pot luck casserole dinner, followed by some of the video from this year's competition at Crufts diplayed up on the big screen (old sheet). (There are some advantages to being the equipment officer).
Another group were staying just up the road at some cabins and they also had a get together on the Saturday night. I am not sure what they did, but I am fairly confident that wine was somehow involved.
As with most training seminars the time seemed to fly by and there was so much information being presented to us that it often felt that we were forgetting it as fast as we were learning, but, a couple of weeks after the event and little snippets of info are still bubbling up in my brain every now and again, so some of it must have sunk in. What made this seminar even more intense than usual was the tag team approach taken by Kath and Karen, taking it in turns to take the floor and share so much of their insight with us.
As well as giving a new slant on some standard topics, we got an excellent breakdown of the way Karen had choreographed her HTM routine for Crufts this year – getting us all up on the floor to look like idiots together (nothing like safety in numbers). We also got to look at some video – including two versions of the same routine – one done with flair and passion, using up all the space, the other done with head down, dog at side, marching up and down to the music. I think that version struck a chord or two with some of us. Another great exercise was being split into groups to put together a routine for 30 seconds of Singing in The Rain (a most appropriate song for the weekend). That was fun, but even more fun was seeing the different groups try to tie it all together as a full routine. The final exercise that I must mention was move scrabble, where three moves were picked at random and then had to be put together in sequence. I am pretty sure we will be seeing that game again.
In addition to the regular attendees, we had a couple of guests with us at various times during the weekend. Lionel Blumel and his wife Debby came along on Friday night for the caberet and Lionel was there for the day on Saturday too – it is great to see the support our discipline gets from the CCCQ. Val & Bruce Bonney also came along for part of the day on Sunday and Col Murfet also made the trek to see us a few times over the weekend.
As always, my biggest personal dissappointment is that Kath and Karen are yet more experts who suggest it is a good idea to put in some effort and actually train with your dog – so once again my vague plan to sit back and wait for it to all just happen has been derailed and I am going to have to do some training.
A huge thank you to all the people who helped put this great weekend together – especially Gay Westmore who was the driving force behind getting Kath and Karen out here. Now all we need is to try and put on better weather for them next time.
